When I was in middle school and high school I was always looking for an animation program for my computer. I never found one. They were always to juvenile, or too advanced and expensive. If Animation-ish was around then, I would have found what I was looking for.

Animation-ish is a great new animation program for kids of all ages. It teaches the beginner how to animate and progress to a more complex animation, and it allows the more advanced user to make a complex animation in a user friendly environment.

Animation-ish is one of the most enjoyable software programs we’ve seen in a long time. Some games aren’t even this much fun. Its playful interface invites you to jump right in and start drawing.

Don’t worry if you think you can’t draw. The ability to draw well may be more handicap than help. If you’ve ever tried to draw using a mouse, you know that it’s a frustrating exercise, at best. But the loose, unpredictable lines you can create with a mouse fit perfectly with Animation-ish’s free and easy nature. The whole point of Animation-ish is to relax and have fun. If you like to doodle, you’re halfway there.

The folks at Toon Boom are at it again. In January they released a kid friendly animation software called Flip Boom. Now, they have released another great program call Comic Boom for making comic strips.

Like Flip Boom, Comic Boom is incredibly easy to use. The drawing tools are your basic tools for drawing and painting tied into a very simple and kid friendly user interface.

Ask web animators what application they use, and the majority will tell you it’s Adobe Flash. That’s too bad. Although Flash CS4 has made great strides by adding 3D and inverse kinematics (bones) to its toolset, it’s a limited animation program when compared to Toon Boom Animate.

Toon Boom Animate includes the following features that Flash lacks: lip-syncing, 3D multiplane cameras, cell swapping, multiple brush tools, and motion blur. Like Flash, Animate includes onion skinning, animateable effects, path editing, gradients, inverse kinematics, masks, reusable symbols, sound support, layers, vector shape tools, and multiple color palettes.

ToonBoom provides just a whole lot of fun creating animation clips. FlipBoom All-Star is their latest flip animation program. Draw the pictures, add in some preselect avatars, scenes, static props, keeping adding more pictures, and then click to watch your hand drawn movie come to life. And now, users can upload photos or music to your flip animations to liven up the action!

Most tweens, teens and beyond will quickly connect with the well laid out interface, and the older crowd (me) can fiddle around figuring out different tools fairly easily. ToonBoom provides a Take A Tour to explain different settings and tools.

I have used many digital animation packages in the past and Toon Boom Animate Pro downloaded and installed easily. Upon opening Toon Boom Animate Pro, I was struck with a very robust and complex interface. This is a serious professional package which is designed to create a streamlined production work flow.
